Making a MediShield Life claim is easy, as you can simply inform the staff handling your hospital admission that you wish to make a claim. Upon your authorisation, the medical institution will submit your claim for you. CPF Board will make any payouts that are due to the medical institution on your behalf.
Your MediShield Life payout is computed based on three factors: the claimable limit, deductible and co-insurance. Here’s a breakdown to help you understand how your MediShield Life claim works.
The portion labelled ‘MediShield Life’ in the illustration above is the part of your bill that is covered under MediShield Life. The remaining sections, i.e. amount above the claimable limit, the deductible and co-insurance components, are payable with Medisave and/or cash.
The maximum amount you can claim from MediShield Life depends on the claim limit for each type of expense, such as the daily ward charges, the type of treatment and length of hospital stay.
The maximum claim limit per policy year is set at $100,000 with no lifetime limit on claims under MediShield Life.

This is an amount you need to pay before the insurance kicks in. This keeps MediShield Life for large hospital bills, and helps keep premiums lower. The deductible is paid only once every policy year, and can be paid via Medisave and/or cash.
For those aged 80 and below, the deductible is $1,500 for stays in C ward type, and $2,000 for stays in B2 ward type and above wards. For those above age 80, the deductible is $2,000 and $3,000 for stays in C/B2 ward types and higher ward types respectively.
The co-insurance is a percentage of the claimable amount you need to pay on top of the deductible.
Under MediShield Life, the co-insurance rate ranges from 10% to 3%, and decreases as your bill size increases. This means greater MediShield Life coverage for larger hospital bills.

(Note: MediShield Life coverage is sized for treatment in B2 or C ward types at public hospitals that are subsidised by the Government. Those who choose to stay in private hospitals or in A or B1 ward types at public hospitals will have to pay more of their bill using Medisave and/or cash).
